We Are the Church

The Church is Born

20With God’s power working in us, God can do much, much more than anything we can ask or think of. 21To God be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all time, forever and ever. Amen.

The Coming of the Holy Spirit

1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a noise came from heaven. It sounded like a strong wind blowing. This noise filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw something that looked like flames of fire. The flames were separated and stood over each person there. 4They were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they began to speak different languages. The Holy Spirit was giving them the power to speak these languages.

Aren’t all these men that we hear speaking from Galilee? 8But each of us hears them in his own language. How is this possible? We are from different places:

36“So, all the people of Israel should know this truly: God has made Jesus both Lord and Christ. He is the man you nailed to the cross!” 37When the people heard this, they were sick at heart. They asked Peter and the other apostles, “What shall we do?” 38Peter said to them, “Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39This promise is for you. It is also for your children and for all who are far away. It is for everyone the Lord our God calls to himself.”

Who did Peter say could become Christians?

THURSDAY

The Believers Share
43The apostles were doing many miracles and signs. And everyone felt great respect for God. 44All the believers stayed together. They shared everything. 45They sold their land and the things they owned. Then they divided the money and gave it to those people who needed it. 46The believers met together in the Temple every day. They all had the same purpose. They broke bread in their homes, happy to share their food with joyful hearts. 47They praised God, and all the people liked them. More and more people were being saved every day; the Lord was adding those people to the group of believers.

The believers didn’t spend any time with each other or pray.

More and more people were being saved every day.

EXPLORE MORE

Who is your best friend? What do you and your friend like to do? Do you play games or go outside or draw pictures? When we are friends with someone, we like to spend time with that person. God created us to need friendship with other people. That’s one reason church is important. Not only do we get to learn about God and grow closer to God, we get to do it with people who also love and want to worship God. These friends can encourage us to do the right thing, pray with us, and show us love and care when bad things happen. Friendship is a great way to show God’s love to others!

This month we are going to learn all about church — how it began after Jesus went back to heaven and sent the Holy Spirit; how it was saved when Peter and John bravely told others about the amazing sacrifice Jesus made; how it grew when Cornelius started following Jesus; how it hurt when James was killed and Peter was thrown in prison. Through it all, we will see just how much God loves the church—the people who follow Him!
